Flower Drying

(Microwave)

Fresh Flowers - Brightly colored flowers dry best. For best results, flowers should be only partially opened. Avoid flowers with thick centers.

Silica Gel - available at hobby shops.

Partially fill a large glass container with silica gel. Place flower, stem down into the gel. Slowly fill the remaining portion with gel. Be careful to place the gel between all the petals of each flower. Use a toothpick to separate the petals. Cover completely with gel. Place jar in the microwave. Place 1 cup of water in the far rear left corner of the oven. Heat on Full power for 1-1/2 to 3 minutes, depending on
flower size. Remove jar from oven. Let stand for 15 minutes.
After standing time, slowly pour gel from jar. Carefully remove flower. Gently brush the excess grains of gel from petal or stem. Flowers may be framed or used in arrangements.
Allow the silica gel to cool before reusing.
