Message Board Info

A couple of suggestions from Tracy...

If you're looking for a specific recipe, I suggest trying Cookbooks On/Line- a searchable database of over 1 million recipes! I have had a lot of success looking there for unusual recipes. Or, there are quite a few links that may help on my recipes page.

Along with the Board here on my site, I highly suggest putting your wonderments on another Message Board, too. There's one on Delores McCann's site that gets a lot of traffic, has many categories, and the people that 'hang out' there are very helpful.

A tiny Message Board primer:

~~~If you don't type any text in the 'subject' box when replying to a message, the original subject will be displayed. Saves typing...
~~~If you want to answer an entry with something really short- for example, "yes, powdered sugar"- go ahead & type that into the box for the subject & end it with 'nt'. This means there is No Text in the body of the message. Saves time...

~~~A letter 'm' after a few words in the subject line means there is more in the text of the message.
~~~On the Main Board page, above the lime green navigation bar, click on "Switch to Board Style". EVERYthing's bigger then! An added bonus of the 'Board Style' view is that the postings get bumped to the top as they get new replies. Everyone is free to choose which view they like, and you can switch back & forth at will!

~~~The "Old Board" cached messages indefinitely. This one does NOT have that capability. I went ahead & gave the Bravenet peoples xtra $$ for upping the saved messages, and that brought it from 1,000 up to 3,000. SO, If anybody wants to keep any info they see in posts....You're gonna have to do it as you see it, I'm afraid, or it'll cycle out before you/we/I can find it again! I don't know about you, but my memory is KAPUT.  I'll keep trying to snag the new links & recipes. I'll post "got it" or something when I grab 'em. Please, please try to flag me on them if you see I've missed one! Tracy
~~~Bravenet (the company that developed & hosts the Board) does not support the WebTV browser. The forum will not work for any visitor using a browser that is not javascript enabled. (this is the big bummer about the new board, I think- Tracy)

~~~A few abbreviations I have seen & finally figured out:
ISO = in search of
HTH = hope this helps
IMHO = in my humble opinion
LOL = lots of laughing OR lots of luck, I haven't decided which
OT = off topic
TIA = thanks in advance
ROFL = rolling on the floor laughing
Re: = regarding
I'll add to this list as I see more & figure out what they mean- Tracy
How do I know when my Board entry gets a response?
There is a box at the bottom of the page when you're typing a posting- If you click on it & fill out your email address at the top of the page, you will receive notice when your posting gets answered. But...
----Speaking of email addresses----
I think it is better for Message Board users to type their email address in the body of their message, rather than in the box that will automatically make a link on their name. This may very well help cut down on the number of CREEPS that mine the internet for email addresses to sell to 'spammers', or for other equally annoying uses. They don't take the time to read the messages! Of course, this makes the above-mentioned feature useless if you don't type your email address in the box. It's completely up to you what you want to do.
How do I post a picture or a link to a site?
To post a link in the Body of the Board message, do the following:
Type this following in without spaces. The only space should be between a & href and in your text:
< a href= "URL of the picture(with.jpg) or page" > the text you want your link to say goes here, typed as you want it to appear < / a >
You can also type the URL into the "Website" area after the Name & Email areas when you're making a posting, and that will come up as a link.
For a picture to be shown in the body of a Board message, You'll need to have it on your (or someone else's) site so that the actual picture has a web address. Then when typing in your message, you add the following-
<IMG SRC=http://thepicturesURL.jpg>
In place of 'thepicturesURL', you would type the actual URL, such as 'webmall1.com/sweetdreams/pic128'. Don't use the ' or any italics, but do use the < & >, and make sure the address has a .jpg (or whatever form the picture is saved in) at the end.
 All this is best done if you go to the actual webpage that the picture is displayed on, right-click on the image that you want to post here, choose 'properties' and cut & paste the image's address (URL). Then add the 'img src='(in all caps) before the http, and put the < & > at the beginning & end. I know it's technical, but we'll get it figured out!
A note: It looks like some hosting services, Geocities for one, will not allow images stored on their site to be linked to in this fashion. If you find that your photos cannot be linked to, you can always type in the URL anyway, and people can cut & paste the address into their browser to see the image.
Here's the info I have from the company I lease the Board from about posting pics that are on a photo-sharing site:
Places like Webshots & Yahoo photo sharing do not allow the external viewing of images. For the photo gallery sites, they should just enter the URL in their post and people can click to look at the image.
The other option is to have them upload the image to the webspace provided by their ISP (They'll need to contact their ISP for directions) and then use the  < img src="URL" > instructions.
This just in (9/24/02)- I found this posting on Delores' M.B., from a Geocities user. I will give it to you as I saw it there:
Here is a way to actually POST your pics here.
In your geocities file manager check the picture you want to post. then select the COPY button at the top of the file manager. Copy the jpg file into the same name, but instead of using .jpg as the extension, change it to .txt
Then come here and do the regular way of posting a pic
inside the <> IMG SRC="url_of_the_cake.txt" Make sure you like the txt file and not the jpg file.
That is a trick work around geocities to fool geocities into thinking it is posting a text file but it is actually a picture.
Hope this helps some!!
